Catherine Rose

Catherine Rose (nee Belnavis) passed away on June 1, 2021. She was born to Thomas and Leah Belnavis in Sturge Town, St. Ann, Jamaica in November 1934. Growing up, she was an active member of her church congregation - singing and playing the piano with the choir as well as leading Sunday school. After attending primary school, she went on to achieve her teaching certificate from Mico Teacher's College and to marry Noel Rose with whom she had three children. She taught grade three at several schools throughout Jamaica and won multiple awards for teaching, dance instruction, and choreographing for festivals and competitions. Her last teaching position in Jamaica was as a highly beloved and esteemed educator at Claremont All Age School before she migrated to the United States in 1977. As a new American citizen living in Los Angeles, California, Catherine earned her nursing degree from Compton College and worked as an orthopedic Registered Nurse at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for over fifteen years. She excelled in both her professions and her pastimes because of her passion for service and caring for others. Preceded in death by her parents and husband, Catherine is survived by her children Dian, Donovan, and Donna as well as her sister Thelma, brother-in-law Jim, son-in-law Trevor, nephew Kevin, grandniece and grandnephew, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be held at 11:OOam on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at San Pedro United Methodist Church, 580 West 6th Street, San Pedro, CA 90731. A private interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Diabetes Association (https://www.diabetes.org/donate/donate-memorial) or to Alzheimer's Association (https://act.alz.org/) would be greatly appreciated.
