Mrs Martha Myles Ruben

October 3, 1916 - September 9, 2019

Martha Miles Ruben was born Tuesday, October 3, 1916, to Fanny Mae Mills and Ed Miles in Fort Necessity, Louisiana. She was the youngest of four children. She had two brothers, Charlie Miles and Lucius Miles and one Sister, Radie Ruth Miles. On January 23, 1937, Martha married John Rubin, Jr. To this union was born ten children. Willie, Ed, Richard, Nathaniel, Samuel, John, Sarah, Mary, Lillie and Mildred. Martha and John moved their family from Fort Necessity to Bastrop, Louisiana. Martha was employed as a nurse at Gunner Hospital and later as an In-Home Care Nurse. A few years after the death of her husband, Martha and her family moved to Los Angeles, California in 1966. In later years, Martha changed the spelling of her last name from Rubin to Ruben. Her older children and their families continue to use Rubin. Martha accepted Christ at an early age. She attended Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Fort Necessity, Louisiana; Macedonia Baptist Church in Bastrop, Louisiana; and for a short while she attended St. Rest Baptist Church in Los Angeles before joining New Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Melvin Hill. Martha and her younger children lived next door to New Pleasant Hill. At that time, New Pleasant Hill worshipped in a small store front building. Martha's home stood in the area of New Pleasant Hill's current parking lot. Martha was a faithful member for 47 years, serving on the Mothers Board and was a faithful Sunday School Scholar. Martha was affectionately known as i/Ma" to all her family and close friends and as Mother Ruben to her church family. She was loved, admired and respected by all. Ma's favorite pastimes were going for car rides, sightseeing, family and church picnics, shopping and returning what she didn't like, often and eating out so she could order her favorite, Shrimp. She enjoyed watching her favorite television programs; i/In the Heat of the Night," i/Young & the Restless" and i/Walker Texas Ranger." Ma was a wonderful mother & grandmother. She loved her family and her church family. She lived a faithful Christian life, making her Heavenly Transition at an amazing 102 years old. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Fanny Miles; her husband, John Rubin, Jr.; her sister, Radie Ruth Miles; her brothers, Charlie Miles and Lucius Miles; her daughters, Mary Ruben and Sarah Ruben and her sons, Willie Rubin and John Ruben. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Ed Rubin (Cecile); Richard Rubin, Nathaniel Ruben (Ruthie), Samuel Ruben, Lillie Ruben Jackson and Mildred Ruben; 36 Grandchildren, 83 Great Grandchildren, 44 Great-Great Grandchildren. And a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends who will miss her dearly.
