Florella Anderson's Obituary
Florella Anderson was born in West Virginia on December
29, 1939, to parents Curtis Frazier Sr. and Katherine Jones. She
was raised in Harlan, KY, alongside her father after the passing of
her mother at the age of 5 years old.
She graduated from Rosenwald High School in Black Mountain,
KY in 1957. After graduation, she briefly moved to Knoxville, TN to
be alongside her sister. She then traveled midwest to St. Louis,
Missouri, to stay with her family. While in St. Louis, she worked in
a laundry house and later became a nurse aide in a Catholic
hospital. It was in St. Louis where Florella met her life partner,
Leroy Anderson. They were wed, and from this wonderful union, a
beautiful baby girl, Andrea Anderson, was born on July 13, 1960. Six
months after the birth of their first child, they traveled west to
Watts, California. On August 11, 1965, during the Watts riots, they
purchased a home in Compton, CA. They made this house a home
for over 50 years.
Florella worked various jobs while being a new wife and
mother. She eventually decided to continue her education by
attending Compton Community College and becoming a registered
nurse in 1986. For 20 years, she was a registered nurse; however,
due to medical reasons, she had to resign.
In 2000, she joined Faith Inspirational Baptist Church in the city of
Compton with Pastor Rafer Owens. She later joined the Young at Heart
group and was a faithful member for years.
As a matriarch, she helped raise her grandchildren and great-
grandchildren. Her door was never closed for family and friends who needed a place to stay. No one was ever turned away.Florella was known for her short stature, fluffy hair, big smile,
and her soft-spoken voice. She had a soprano voice and loved to
sing in the choir and throughout the house while doing daily tasks.
Although she mostly enjoyed gospel music, she would not hesitate
to rock side to side if a good tune was playing. She deeply loved her
family, those near and far. She was amazed at how large it had
grown over the years.
On Thursday, February 23, 2024, at 4:45 A.M., the Lord
whispered her name, and she answered.
Florella leaves behind her loving memories, daughter Felisha,
her grandchildren Shila Green (Manwell), Lee Wade (Katrina),Michael Neal II, Keitaya, Farah, Kaiylen, and Raiylenn; her great-grandchildren Cheyenne (Alma), Joseph, Crystal, Savannah, Antaijha, Diamond, Mykayla, Armani, Maddisyn, Miracle, and Michael III, and best friend Elaine James as well as a host of family and friends.
