Joseph Evans' Obituary
Joseph Judward Evans was born on July 5, 1936, in Palestine, Texas to the parents of Sutton O.J. Evans and Mary Alice Boutte.
He received the sacrament of baptism at an early age. Joe, as he was affectionately known, went on to become a member of
The Macedonia Baptist Church in 1951. He remained active in the Youth Choir and Usher Board, until he relocated to Pasadena,
California Joe then united in fellowship with Friendship i Baptist Church on March 27, 2005; where he was a diligent member
of the Men's Choir.
In his early years, Joe received his early education in the public schools of Texas. After relocating to California, he enrolled
in Gompers Jr. High and then attended David Starr Jordan High School where he excelled in Art. The "Class Plaque" which the designed still remains in the Senior Quad at Jordan High School. After graduation, he received his degree at
Compton Junior College.
Joe began his employment career as "The friendly Grocer" in Los Angeles, Pasadena and Compton areas. He later became a
teller at First Western Bank in Watts, California. Joe found a rewarding 20 plus year career at Sam Cooks Uniforms in Los Angeles, where he tailored and supplied uniforms for various official agencies such as LAPD, Metro MTA, as well as Southern California Restaurants.
While in Los Angeles, Joe was a member of Mt. Nebo Masonic Lodge. Once living in Pasadena, CA, he then joined
Mt. Lebo Grand Lodge, OED where he received his 33° Degree Mason. He also served as Worthy Patron of The Order of the Eastern Star. His Masonic travels allowed him and his son, Joey II to not only be father and son, but Masonic Lodge brothers. Among Joseph's many hobbies, he enjoyed playing Santa Claus throughout his community, passing out toys to children and surprising residents at local convalescent homes. He also enjoyed fishing with his neighborhood buddies. Above all, he
loved to make people laugh.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and his big brother Dallas. He leaves to mourn his passing, his sons,
Joseph "Joey" II, Alvin, Derrick and his daughter Latasha, his sister Olivette Hester (Al), Sister-in-Law, Gloria Evans (Dallas),
several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and dear friends.
