Birth date: Oct 27, 1958 Death date: Dec 17, 2021
Maxine "walked into my life", at the pinnacle of my ambition to turn a childhood dream into reality. As I desired to represent my school, [James A. Foshay Jr. High] as "Ms. Foshay", a distinguished honor as school ambassador, empowering and advocating for leaders of tomorrow.[1] I dreamt of this achievement from seventh grade until my ninth-grade year, [the required grade-level to compete in the pageant].
My brother, Chauncey Abney, (five years my senior, and Maxie's friend since Santa Barbara Elementary) deemed it suitable for Jerome Covington, (Maxie's and Chauncey's friend since Foshay Jr. High) to assist me with my speech, and Maxine to "mentor" me for the modeling and talent competition. Jerome graciously responded to the "call", and after asking me to [first] write the speech in my own words, helped transform it into a diplomatic piece of "literary" art, (intellectually expressing my thoughts, defending my beliefs, and showcasing my communication skills). Maxine happily accepted her role, and better yet, took it very seriously, as well. First, she assessed my natural gifts and talents. Second, she analyzed the "common" behaviors and performances of pageant contestants. Third, she devised a “revolutionary" plan stating, "Everybody else will do that...however you will do this!"
Maxine, coached me on how to cross the stage, (akin to a runway model), with poise, grace and a little added flair; how to approach the judges panel as a positive role model, exuding a confident and commanding presence, complemented with grace and my cheerful personality. [2] Maxine also choreographed my talent; a skit and dance to Bette Midler's, Boogie Woogie Bugal Boy, where I portrayed a middle-aged woman seated in a chair, donning eyeglasses; long-tresses wrapped in a bun; and eyes fixed on a book. Suddenly, at the sound of brass instruments on the radio, the character reminisces the days of her youth and begins dancing to the rhythm with hair down, tossed glasses, and closed book.
A prior commitment prevented Maxine from attending the pageant competition, amongst my family and friends. However, as a Christian [since age fourteen], I remembered, Scripture teaches, "whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men". (Col 3:23) Nonetheless, after Maxine’s countless hours of dedication and commitment to my preparation, I notably sensed her applause, confidence, and beaming smile in the school auditorium, (akin to a theatrical director seated in the audience cheering for the cast).
I thank God for the love and support of my family, friends, Homeroom teacher, ["Ms. Love" who encouraged me in the midst of challenges]; Seventh-Grade Leadership Class Teacher, [Mr. Jimmie Walker, who provided opportunities for me to develop my leading, planning and organizational skills, and continues to inspire me to this day]; and two destiny helpers, (Jerome and Maxine). As on the day of the pageant, God blessed me to turn my childhood dream into a reality! Albeit, God sees His children as "the crown!"
" Then you will be a beautiful crown in the hand of the LORD, a royal crown in the hand of your God." Isa 62:3 GW
May God's grace and blessings lead your paths,
Gwendolyn K. Abney

Maxine was always sweet and caring! A Lady with a big pure heart and her hugs were warm and solid. Hearing remarks of her life today, reminded me that they had also experienced what l knew of her. She was real and true💜 I’m Donna Walker of Oakland CA. Her twin bother Maxie’s wife Elfrida and l are cousins and l met Maxine at their wedding. I was shocked hearing of her passing. I will miss her genuine caring and kind nature, upon seeing her at the family events. Praying for Peace and strength to Max,family and all who knew and loved Maxine🕊️
I met Maxine and Maxie as teenagers when we worked together at McDonald’s. She was my coming of age friend. She was a devoted sister, daughter, aunt, and friend. She loved hard and would give you her whole heart unconditionally, and truly had compassion and reverence for seniors. Maxine was faithful. While I will miss her with the same passion as she lived, I am comforted in knowing that she is with the Lord.
May God bring you peace Maxie, in the passing of your twin. I extend my most sincere condolences to the Hamilton family.
In sympathy and love,
-Carol Rozier-Carodine
Maxine was my cousin whom I regarded as my little sister. We grew up next door to each other in Oklahoma, until her family moved to Los Angeles. We always had a close bond and stayed in touch with each other. I can still hear her warm “Hey Cuz” greeting when I would call her.
Maxine was beautiful -inside and outside. She had a big heart and was always giving to someone in need. Maxine’s smile could light up the world. I will miss her greatly.
May God surround our family with His love, comfort and peace.
